Boston – a glimpse of the city
Boston, the capital of Massachusetts is New England’s largest and America’s 11th largest metropolitan city. It is unofficially considered as the cultural and economic center of New England. The economy of the city is based upon technology, finance and research. After the independence of America, the city became one of the major manufacturing centers and shipping port. It has pioneered a number of things; such as America’s first public school, Boston Latin School (1635), the first college, Harvard College in Cambridge and the first subway.
Boston – country’s centre of Education
Boston is the country’s center of education and the city is home to nearly 100 colleges and universities that are attended by about 250,000 students. Boston university is the main university of the city and is the fourth largest employer of Boston. Various famous national universities are situated outside of Boston, but they have a huge presence in the city. The oldest university of the country, Harvard University is situated in Cmbridge, across the Charles River. The famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for many years known as Boston Tech was originally located in Boston, but later in 1916 it was shifted to Cambridge.
Boston has a lot of similarities with New England, such as regional cuisine with a great importance of rum, tobacoo, dairy products and seafood and dialect of the non-rhotic Eastern New England accent, called as Boston English. Its religious institutions and politics are highly influenced by Irish Americans.
Art and culture
Boston has a distinct cultural identity and most of its culture starts from the university. It has a number of ornate theatres, such as Boston Opera House, Cutler majestic Center and The Wang Center for the Performing Arts. Boston is home to various famous annual events, which include First Year, which takes place during the eve of the New Year, Boston Pops concert and a number of events, which are held on the fourth of July. There are various other attractions for tourists. Faneuil Hall Marketplace is famous for its collections of eateries, boutiques and pushcart vendors. Tourists can enjoy the city’s tradition of riding on the swan boats in the public garden.
Because of its rich history, Boston annually attracts 16.3 million of tourists. Boston had a significant role in the American Revolution. Various sites related to that era have been preserved in the Boston national Historical Park. It has also numerous popular art museums such as Isabella Stewart gardener Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts. Other prominent places of Boston are John F Kennedy Library, New England Aquarium and Bull and Finch Pub. Boston is rich in music and has contributed numerous popular music groups.

Boston is well connected by air. The most important airport of Boston is Logan International Airport. Most of the air travelers of the city take their flight from this airport. A number of flights operate from the airport, which go to various destinations of the US, Canada, The Caribbean, Mexico, Europe and the Cape Verde Islands. |
